Therapeutic prostate massage: is it useful for prostatitis?
The therapeutic prostate massage useful for prostatitis?
The prostate massage is a procedure that can be performed indirectly, by applying pressure to the man's perineal area, or directly, by inserting a finger through the anus and performing a series of delicate circular movements directly on the prostate.
In oriental medicine, therapeutic prostate massage has been used for a long time with the aim of eliminating the residues that are deposited in the prostate gland, thus reducing the pressure on theurethra to promote bladder function.
In Western medicine, therapeutic prostate massage has been one of the most recommended practices for patients suffering from chronic prostatitis. However, it seems strongly discouraged in cases of acute infection.
This use was originally thought to be caused by bacterial inflammation within the prostate, causing blockages and thus fluid retention in the organ, thus promoting prostate irritation.
However, there does not appear to be a strong scientific basis to support the use of prostate massage in the treatment of prostatitis, just as there is no evidence in the prevention of prostate cancer.
Prostate massage, on the other hand, is a practice that can alleviate symptoms related tobenign prostatic hyperplasia , or enlarged prostate, helping maintain the health of this male gland. A well-performed prostate massage by an experienced practitioner can promote good blood flow, improve oxygenation of prostate tissue, and help alleviate urinary problems and erectile dysfunction related to enlargement.
Prostate massage, as well as a digital rectal examination performed during a urological examination, cause an increase in PSA in the blood. It is therefore recommended not to perform the PSA test in the days immediately following these procedures to avoid altering the results.
